How to choose plastic injection molds steel?
How to choose plastic injection molds steel?
How to choose the injection mold steel reasonably is a complicated project, and it is also the key link of the injection mold manufacturing. This is an important task related to the life of the mold and the cost of the injection mold. Generally, the materials used to make plastic injection molds first need to have a certain degree of hardness and abrasion resistance. Second, it should have strength and toughness. Before choosing injection mold steel, we first need to understand the classification of the mold. Molds are usually divided into 5 levels according to their service life:
Level 1: The service life of the mold exceeds one million times.
Level 2: The service life of the mold is 500,000 to 1 million times.
Level 3: The service life of the mold is 300,000 to 500,000 times.
Level 4: The service life of the mold is 100,000 to 300,000 times.
Level 5: The service life of the mold is less than 100,000 times.
In addition, the basic properties of steel need to be understood
1. Steel has sufficient surface hardness and wear resistance.
The surface roughness and dimensional accuracy of plastic parts and the service life of injection molds are directly related to the hardness and wear resistance of the mold surface, especially the molding surface of the mold, such as the core and cavity of the mold. Therefore, it is required that the molding surface of the injection mold has sufficient hardness. For small plastic molds, you can choose high carbon high alloy steel. For large plastic molds, you can choose carburized steel and heat treatment to harden it, so as to obtain higher wear resistance and prolong the service life of the mold.
2. Steel has sufficient strength and toughness.
Because injection molds, especially injection molds, are subjected to large molding pressure during the injection process, large and medium-sized injection molds or injection molds with complex cavity shapes should have high strength and toughness to meet the requirements for use performance.
3. Steel has good processability.
Most injection molds require some machining and benchmarking. In order to extend the service life of cutting tools, improve cutting performance and reduce surface roughness, plastic injection molded steel must have appropriate hardness to obtain the necessary accuracy and surface roughness.
4. Heat treatment deformation is small.
Injection mold parts are usually complex in shape and difficult to process after quenching, or even impossible to process at all. Therefore, steel with a small heat treatment deformation should be selected. In this way, the processing of injection mold parts can be reduced or no longer performed after heat treatment, so that the dimensional accuracy and surface quality requirements of plastic molds can be guaranteed.
5. Has good corrosion resistance
Plastics and additives are chemically corrosive to steel surfaces. Therefore, the selected mold steel should have certain corrosion resistance.
6. Has good polishing performance
In order to obtain smooth plastic parts, the surface roughness of the mold cavity is required to be small, so the mold cavity must be polished to reduce the surface roughness of the mold cavity. Moreover, the selected steel does not have rough impurities and pores, and does not occur during polishing, pitting or orange peel defects
